Car accidents can happen, even while backing out of driveway
It can happen in an instant. A car accident is often unanticipated and can cause serious injuries to those involved. Motor vehicle accidents can occur on highways or on back roads. Regardless, the collision between two vehicles can lead to significant consequences and repercussions.
Earlier this week, an accident occurred in Polk County between a car and motorcycle. The car had been backing out of a driveway when the motorcycle crashed into the side of the vehicle. The motorcyclist attempted to stop but failed to do so, losing control of the bike. The two individuals on the motorcycle were killed at the crash scene; the two in the car did not sustain any known injuries.
Motorcycles are some of the smallest vehicles that share the road with cars, SUVS, vans, and even semi-trucks. If drivers are not aware of motorcycles in the lane next to them, an accident can occur. In this particular case, the driver may not have even realized a motorcycle was traveling towards the car before backing out of the driveway.
A driver is responsible for being alert even during a seemingly routine action such as backing out of a driveway. Negligence behind the wheel does not just apply on highways. Responsibility begins from the time a driver takes control and a vehicle is in motion.
When a simple turn of the head to check traffic conditions is neglected, it can unnecessarily cause injury or death. Two lives that were connected with friends, co-workers, employers and families are lost in a moment of carelessness that can never be taken back.
