Duck boats have troubling history
A popular tourist activity is under scrutiny after a recent tragic accident in Missouri. But, these vehicles have had many fatal accidents that may show that they are unsafe.
Tragedy struck duck boat tourists in Missouri lately. 17 people were killed when the duck boat they were on capsized. But, this isn’t the first time duck boats have been in serious accidents. In the past 19 years, there have been at least seven other fatal accidents that have killed over 25 people.
Duck boats were originally used in World War II and were called DUKW’s, used for both land and sea missions. These boats were built for invasions, deliver troops and supplies. But, even during WWII, many of these vehicles sank because they were overloaded and the water was turbulent. The first tourist duck boats were used beginning in 1946 in Wisconsin Dells, where there are still over 90 in operation. Miami has many duck boats as well that are popular tourist activities.
When a person engages in a fun activity, like riding a duck boat, they don’t expect they will be involved in a serious accident. These accidents are rare, but many families have been affected across the United States. An unexpected fatal accident can lead to a family facing unexpected financial hardship and emotional trauma. A legal professional who is skilled in personal injury can help a family who is facing these circumstances. They can investigate what happened to cause the accident and determine who is at fault. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, funeral expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.
