5 tips for staying safe on Miami’s dangerous roads

As a Florida resident, you are no stranger to the dangerous nature of driving in the state. In 2022 alone, Miami-Dade County saw 63,482 crashes, 28,707 injuries and 321 deaths.

Those statistics are alarming. While there are no guaranteed ways to avoid a motor vehicle accident, there are some ways you can help protect yourself and others while traveling Miami’s dangerous roads.

1. Stay calm

Road rage is a common problem on Florida roads. When other drivers act inconsiderately or aggressively, do not engage them. Instead, stay calm and try to diffuse the situation.

2. Keep a safe distance

Allow yourself enough space to react if the car in front of you hits the brakes. Keeping a safe distance also helps you see what is ahead to make proactive decisions. You never know when an iguana will be on the road!

3. Maintain a responsible speed

Be careful not to exceed the posted speed limit, as doing so can negatively impact your reaction time and lead to accidents. Conversely, traveling too far under the speed limit opens you up to a host of other hazards, such as being rear-ended or becoming the victim of road rage.

4. Watch for others

Having the road to yourself is an ideal but unlikely scenario in South Florida. Keep your eyes open for other drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists, pedestrians and pets, frequently checking your mirrors and blind spots.

5. Look out for road debris

From ladders and buckets to blown tires and bumpers, road debris is a widespread problem in Florida. Watch for other drivers’ reactions and keep a safe distance from those around you to prevent accidents.

Remember these tips to help safeguard yourself from harm on Miami’s roads.
