Death Or Disability From Anesthesia Errors Require An Aggressive Attorney
When you go under anesthesia, you are putting your life in the hands of a medical professional. The administration of anesthesia must be carefully planned, executed and monitored. Too little anesthetic can result in unbearable pain or frightening consciousness during surgery. Too much anesthetic can stop your heart or cause brain damage.
While there is always a risk when you undergo anesthesia, certain errors — such as failure to monitor a patient’s vital signs while he or she is under — should never happen. If your loved one died or suffered an unexplained injury on the operating table, it might have been triggered by a preventable anesthesia error.
The attorneys of Kurzban Kurzban Tetzeli & Pratt, P.A. in Miami, Florida, have a successful record in medical malpractice litigation, including lawsuits against anesthesiologists and hospitals for adverse effects of anesthesia. We handle cases of anesthesiology malpractice throughout Florida and the United States. Call (786) 788-8557 for a free case evaluation.
$7.2 Million Jury Verdict For Anesthesia Malpractice
Our lawyers obtained a $7.2 million verdict against Mercy Hospital in Miami and an anesthesiologist for negligent care that left a 22-year-old man brain dead. The patient suffered the injury during a routine operation for a broken leg. Through medical evidence and expert testimony, we proved that the hospital and anesthesiologist failed to appropriately monitor the patient during surgery. At the time, the $7.2 million verdict was the largest in Florida for medical malpractice. See some of our other case results here.
Did The Anesthesiology Team Fail In Its Duty?
The anesthesiologist is responsible for choosing the appropriate anesthetic, calculating the dosage and calibrating the apparatus that delivers it. Typically, the anesthesiologist will put the patient under. During surgery, anesthesia may be regulated by a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), under the supervision of an anesthesiologist on site who may be overseeing two or more operations. The patient’s vital signs (breathing, pulse, brain activity, etc.) must be closely monitored for signs of distress.
Our attorneys are your powerful advocates if something went awry. We may pursue legal action against the surgeon, the anesthesiologist or anesthesiology group, the nurse anesthetist and/or the hospital for a life-changing outcome and the aftermath endured by the victim and family:
- Cardiac arrest (heart damage)
- Stroke (paralysis, loss of speech)
- Coma
- Brain injury (cognitive deficits, motor impairment)
- Wrongful death
Patients who survive may require nursing home or assisted care and deserve to be compensated for past and future medical expenses, loss of income, lasting disability, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering. We work to maximize compensation to cover our clients’ needs and give them the best quality of life possible after surgery is gone wrong.
